Badlega India

The CCTV footage is breath taking and scary. A young woman taking a call on her mobile just outside her gate. A man walking slowing around went unnoticed. In no hurry looking her up and down. She’s small and he’s big. Suddenly he grabs her, lifts her off her feet, and carries her away, out of the frame. We can see she’s kicking her feet vigorously and although we can’t hear them in the video it’s easy to imagine her screams. Other people go about their business seemingly indifferent, made no attempts to stop the abduction and save her.

But she managed to save herself.

Although he carried her off to a construction site she kept struggling. She bit him too. He finally ran away and she’s saying to girls out there, believe in yourself, keep fighting, nothing’s impossible.

She’s 22 years old and she was taken from right outside her paying guest accommodation in Katriguppe, in Bengaluru. She says she used to feel safe in the city. Certainly she felt safe in her own neighborhood. Yet, it was so easy for a man to just grab her and take off. Nobody came infront to help then, after she rescued herself what least is expected happened, everybody discouraging her to seek justice.

Police have finally moved on the case more than one week later, after CCTV footage from a neighbor’s house was aired on a TV channel. This is eerily similar to how they had abandoned their posts during the Jat agitation in Haryana but footage from hundreds of CCTV cameras is helping round up the rioters.

Karnataka home minister G Parameshwar has announced that the city will soon install 750 more CCTV cameras in addition to the 153 already operational at various commercial and sensitive locations.

This will help but the terrible feeling remains. If someone could just grab her from right outside her gate, how safe are you and I? Is one supposed to remain on the alert at all times, in all places? Can’t one chill talking on one’s phone even on a busy road?

The only thing that gives strength to others is her strength. She fought back and she’s saying learn to fight back and prevail. Kudos!
