Panic prevailed in Kolkata after an under-construction flyover collapsed in one of city’s busiest roads on Thursday afternoon, trapping several others under the debris.
The flyover was set to be one of the longest in the city, connecting Girish Park in north Kolkata to Howrah.
The accident took place in the crowded area near Ganesh Talkies in Kolkata. Vehicles are still trapped under the debris as rescue efforts continue.
Army deployed four columns of rescue personnel and three medical teams to counter the disaster.Paramilitary forces in the city on election duty have reached the spot to lend a helping hand to the rescue efforts.
The principal of Calcutta Medical College T K Lahiri told HT that two persons were “brought dead” while two were undergoing treatment at the hospital. Several ambulances have been rushed to the accident site to provide medical aid to the injured people.
The people were seen extracting out from the debris by cutting through stones slabs with huge drilling machines by the rescue workers on the site. Personnel from disaster management authority rushed to the spot. The under-construction flyover was set to be one of the longest in the city.
Hundreds of people feared trapped under the debris now. There are frightful images of bodies trapped beneath the debris with no signs of life.
