On Friday, Delhi court awarded life imprisonment to five convicts in 2014 gangrape case of a Danish tourist.

Mahendra alias Ganja (27), Mohd Raja (23), Raju (24), Arjun (22) and Raju Chakka (23) were convicted under sections 376 (D) (gangrape), 395 (dacoity), 366 (abducting woman), 342 (wrongful confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

The five convicts had gangraped the 52-year-old Danish tourist at knife point near the New Delhi railway station.

Two years ago nine men, including three juveniles, were accused of abducting, raping and robbing the 52-year-old at knife-point on January.

The woman, who asked for directions to her hotel in Paharganj area of the city, was taken to a secluded placed, beaten up, raped and looted.

Shyam Lal, 56 years old, one of the accused died in February in Tihar Jail while the three minors were facing proceedings before the Juvenile Justice Board.

India brought in more stringent laws two years ago against sexual offenders after the fatal gangrape of a student in Delhi in December 2012, but they have failed to stem the tide of violence against women across the country.
