A police official posted with the Ranchi Crime Investigating Department (CID) was suspended for allegedly torturing a 13-year-old tribal girl working as a maid in his house, authorities said on Thursday.
The action was taken against the official on the basis on initial investigation made by CID Superintendent of Police Jaya Rai.
The issue of torture came to light on Monday when reports said the girl was not only brutally thrashed by Thakur, his wife and brother-in-law but was also hit with a hot iron rod.
Thakur and his family have gone missing since after the issue was reported in local media.
Police sources said cases under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) have been lodged against Thakur and his family.
The Jharkhand high court on Wednesday directed a compensation of Rs 25,000 be paid to the minor girl.
The next hearing will take place on August 17.
