This is what Surbhi, the elder daughter of the family had to say to Times of India:

“The man was not prepared for the attack. He thought that I will let him go. He started running towards the Metro station when I screamed for help. Without losing a moment, my sister, who was a few steps ahead, and I ran after him. In the meantime, I also made a PCR call and caught him near the Shadipur Metro station. The self-defence classes were organized by Delhi Police at the school I passed out from. I had attended the program just to meet my old friends, but I never thought that the tactics would help me one day. I had learned just two steps – how to deal with an assailant if he attacks from the front side, and from the back side.”

A man trying to snatch a 21-year-old’s mobile phone and bag on Tuesday didn’t know what he was in for! Little did he know that the girl’s self-defence tactics would land him behind the bars.

As per a report in Times of India, Surbhi Ralhan, the gutsy law student, got the better of the accused as she kicked, punched, chased and dragged him all the way to the Patel Nagar police station. And what came in handy were the self-defence tactics she had learnt in her school in February as part of an alumni function.

At 9pm, Surbhi was returning home with her sister, Simran, from Khanna Market in Patel Nagar. The accused, Saddam, grabbed her while she was talking on phone. He tried to choke her fearing she would scream. But before he could flee with her belongings, Surbhi overpowered him with a fierce blow on his stomach with her elbow. She kicked him on his leg smacking him to the ground.

The sisters held him by collar and dragged him towards the police station 100 metres from the Metro station.

A commerce graduate from Janki Devi Memorial College, Surbhi is currently pursuing a law course from BR Ambedkar College.

“The self-defence classes were organized by Delhi Police at the school I passed out from. I had attended the programme just to meet my old friends, but I never thought that the tactics would help me one day. I had learned just two steps-how to deal with an assailant if he attacks from the front side, and from the back side,“ she said.

She said she always carries a pepper spray but on Tuesday she couldn’t get the chance to use it.

Her mother, a homemaker, said the sisters went out to buy gifts for their younger brother and were expected to return within minutes as the market was close by . However, later she learnt about the incident.

Simran said thrashing someone was unexpected of her sister who is generally polite at home.

Meanwhile, SK Gautam, joint commissioner of police, central range, said, “The robber has been arrested under the IPC Section 393 (attempt to commit robbery) at Patel Nagar police station. We have decided to reward the woman for her commendable action. Such incidents are an example for other women too.”
