There is something magical about how mothers know exactly what you’re going through. It is a skill they have developed over the years and they never fail to understand what’s on your mind. When you’re ill, you need to eat. You’re stressed? You need food. You ask for permission for a late night, the answer is no. When she doesn’t want to say no, she’ll simply ask you to take permission from your father, which also means no. Venturing out late at night is dangerous and she knows of all the people you will definitely land yourself in trouble.
There are certain things every Indian mother just knows. Your mother knows all of this too.
‘Khana khaya?’ You haven’t eaten your food. She is certain that you’ll forget to eat unless you’re reminded of it over a call.
You just need food. Back from a long day after work? Stressed? Unwell? All you need is food. Her food is going to work like magic and whatever it is that’s bothering you will be sorted immediately once you’re full.
You’ve lost weight ever since you’ve moved out. You really haven’t lost a milligram or a millimetre since you’ve left but your mother can just see how weak you have become.
You won’t find a thing in the house if she isn’t home. ‘Mom, where are my clothes/bags/shows/driving license?’ You really have no clue what you would have done without her. She is your domestic Google Maps giving you directions all the time because you can never remember where you keep your stuff. Also, you need to organise your cupboard.
You need more money. If you’re in college and the calendar says half the month is over, she knows you need money already.
You’re having a bad day. A long meeting at work or an ugly fight with your best friend, mom just knows what to do to cheer you up. A tight hug or strong tea, she knows how to make you smile.
The only reason why things go wrong is because you’re always on your phone. Look at her when she is talking. She wakes up late at night and finds you texting. You’re texting while you are walking and you’re texting when she is talking to you. No wonder you complain so much. Everything that goes wrong with you is because you never look up from your phone.
You’re faking a headache to bunk college. If there’s an important cricket match or a difficult test, she knows you are faking that headache or illness. She will support you in taking an off because she is after all your mother.
You treat home like a hotel. You just come back home, eat and sleep! This is home and not a hotel. You have to talk to people at home and shoulder a few responsibilities too.
Now that you’re working you need to settle down. If you’ve been working for a couple of years, now is the time for you to get married. She knows this is the right time and she will find out a match sooner than you know.
