The demand of discarding the E-voting machines grew more on Saturday, when Congress made allegations over the malfunctioning of an electronic voting machine in the state during an official media demonstration ahead of an assembly by election in Madhya Pradesh next week.
The opposition party, Congress said that the paper trail attached to the machine generated a receipt with BJP’s symbol when the button of Samajwadi Party candidate was pressed by the Chief electoral officer, Saleena Singh.
She dismissed the charges and said, “When you have a fully calibrated machine, this cannot happen like this. But they (journalists) misrepresented the facts without trying to understand the whole issue”.
The video of this incident went viral over the internet, where Singh allegedly sounds shocked and surprised on seeing the voter verifiable paper audit trail receipt. She was heard laughing and warning the journalists and they could be imprisoned if this incident gets publicized.
Congress said, it would ask the election commission also several AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal – demanding an inquiry into allegations of EVM fraud.
The EVMs are under careful investigation due to so many allegations from several parties – especially Bahujan Samaj Party and AAP – that EVMs were tampered to benefit BJP during state elections. A petition is filled against the efficiency of EVMs in the Supreme Court.
As per the journalists who were present at the demonstration on Friday, when Singh pressed button number 4 on the EVM, the printout of the VVPAT machine produced a lotus symbol and name of a candidate Satyadev Pachouri. When she pressed the first button, the Congress symbol was on the printout. The Bahujan Samaj Party’s symbol elephant and an independent candidate’s symbol hand pump were generated when button numbers two and three were pressed, respectively, the scribes reported.
The order of VVPAT receipts dis not match with the order of candidates on the EVM as per Congress leaders. They say the EVM order was: BJP at number 1, Congress at 2, Bahujan Mukti Morcha at 3 and SP at 4.
Deepak Vijayvargiya, state BJP chief spokesperson said that his party has full faith in the election process being conducted for 67 years.
He said,“The Congress too should respect the constitutional bodies. There was no manipulation in the machine”.
After three weeks, BSP chief Mayawati alleged that EVMs were manipulated to benefit BJP in Uttar Pradesh and got victories even in constituencies with large number of Muslim people. Kejriwal had also said that a fourth of his party’s votes was transferred to the Akali Dal-BJP combine in Punjab. The BJP and the EC have dismissed the charges.
