The Canacona police arrested a 23-year-old man who is having a criminal background and is charges of raping and killing a 28-year-old Irish woman, Danielle McLaughlin. McLaughlin’s nude body was found by the police in an isolated area of Deubaug, in South Goa, on Tuesday morning.
Police said that the alleged man’s name is Vikat Bhagat, and he is a resident of Bhagatwada, Char Rasta, Canacona. Police further stated reportedly that they are investigating how many more people are involved in this crime.
Something like this also another rape case happened in 2008. It addressed the rape and murder of 15-year-old Briton Scarlett Keeling. And her culprits are still roaming free and never arrested.
Bhagat is already having a criminal record, police sources said. Three other people were also seen with the woman at a shack at Colomb, which is the very near area where the victim’s body was found. Police sources claimed that Bhagat already admitted that he had raped the Irishwoman after abducting and taking her to an isolated area on a Monday night.
After raped her, Bhagat killed her with a broken beer bottle to prevent her from revealing his identity. Next day, the victim’s body was found naked in the same area and there were massive injuries found in her head and face.
“Seven injury marks were observed on different parts of her body, including head and face, suggesting a scuffle”, DSP Sammy Tavares, supervising the investigations, stated to the media portal TOI.
Police are now waiting to see the post-mortem report, which will be conducted by doctors at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim. After the declaration of the full medical report, Police will take appropriate action. Police asked GMC to preserve her nail clippings and other forensic material for DNA outlined.
As per reports, SP (north) Karthik Kashyap, also holding the charge as SP (south), said the accused had confessed his infamous crime. Sources said the shack where McLaughlin was last seen is very popular tourist place for foreigners even for the domestic tourists too. On Monday, Holi celebrations were organised at the place where the victim McLaughlin arrived with her friends to participate in the said event.
The accused Bhagat was arrested on the basis of CCTV footage and the footage revealed that three more people were seen with him. The sources further said that the killed woman visited Goa last year too so she was friendly with the locations.
She had known Bhagat since her last visit, sources said. This year, she had taken accommodation at Arambol, north Goa, since February 23. Police sources said she came down to Canacona on March 12 and she was living with her friend at the Agonda. On Monday, she proceeded to Palolem at around 1 pm. In this place, she was seen with the accused at a shack in Overem, Palolem, till around 9.30pm, as revealed by CCTV footage.
The clothes which the dead woman was wearing were found packed in a bag near Bhagat’s house, police sources claimed. The scooter belonging to the accused has also been attached, as also the British passport belonging to the deceased (she held dual nationality).
The Irish embassy and the British high commission are in touch with the Indian authorities. Reports said McLaughlin had left Ireland in February to go “backpacking around the world”. She spent her childhood in Buncrana and was part of the local Scoil Mhuire secondary school, and later studied at a university in Liverpool.
